Identifying Abuse

Domestic Abuse Tips - Identifying Abuse

You may be a victim of domestic abuse if your partner:
  • Is excessively jealous and accuses you of having affairs
  • Looks at you or acts in ways that scare you
  • Wants to know where you are all of the time and frequently calls, emails and texts you throughout the day
  • Tells you that you’re a bad parent or threatens to take away or hurt your children
  • Criticizes you or puts you down; most commonly tells you that you are “crazy,” “stupid” and/or “fat,” or that no one would ever want or love you
  • Blames the entire failure of previous relationships on their partner; for example, “My ex was a total b***h.”
  • Grew up in an abusive or violent home
  • Acts like the abuse is no big deal, it’s your fault, or even denies doing it
  • Insists that you stop spending time with your friends or family
  • Takes your money, makes you ask for money or refuse to give you money
  • Insists that you stop participating in leisure interests
  • Destroys your property or threaten to kill your pets
  • Prevents you from working or attending school
  • Intimidates you with guns, knives or other weapons
  • Makes all of the decisions
  • Shoves you, slaps you, chokes you, or hits you
  • Rages out of control and is impulsive
  • Forces you to try and drop charges
  • Threatens to take your passport or cancel your visa
  • Threatens to commit suicide
  • Has a history of battering others
  • Threatens to kill you
