The Breast Cancer Support Group of the Bank and Fund welcomes staff and spouses who are diagnosed with breast cancer to a monthly meeting to offer mutual support, information on breast cancer treatment, and outreach to newly-diagnosed women. We try to be a 'clearing house,' pointing to sources of support in the community and giving each other the chance to talk through our story, so that others may learn from our collective experiences. In between our monthly meetings, we keep in touch through phone calls and emails. We are learning the gentle art of being "breast cancer buddies," sending the message of hope and affirming that we are in this together, however individual our experiences and our choices in treatment.

we all share the international perspective that being a part of these institutions brings with it in terms of sensitivities, such as travel, the work pressures that put relentless demands on us at a time when we need to let up and concentrate on our health, the need to understand a different system of health care when we are most vulnerable and wanting the 'familiar,' separation from family and friends back home, and the age old problem of thinking that we are the "only ones" with this set of problems! In this role of providing support to staff and spouses dealing with the reality of living with breast cancer, our group plays a unique role in direct outreach by and for survivors. We have, however, joined forces with all of those who advocate for breast cancer issues and who represent the interests of breast cancer survivors in the workplace and in the community at large.

All that is said and written in connection with these meetings is held private and strictly confidential.
